Bespoke Lighting Pendant Brings Luxe to Industrial Icon at Powerhouse Lots Road

Studiotech collaborated with the design team to deliver an incredible feature within one of London’s most iconic industrial buildings, Lots Road Power Station.

At the heart of the space is a 70-metre long bespoke pendant made up of a series of 24 interlocking octagons, the largest being 4.5 metres in diameter!  The pendant is supported by a custom gantry installed between the original chimneys.

Our services included engineering design, control design and integration, fabrication, supply, and installation of the bespoke pendant and gantry, control, programming and commissioning.

Engineering Design: Pendant

To meet the design brief for ultra-thin, interlocking octagons with integrated lighting, Studiotech engineered a 25mm aluminium profile with internal cavities for wiring and a recessed lighting strip.

Each octagon was modularly constructed in sections for precise installation. We also designed a bespoke gantry system with a telescopic joint to ensure structural stability between the chimneys.

Engineering Design: Gantry System

Studiotech designed and fabricated the gantry system which was mounted between the two chimneys. To ensure structural stability and accommodate any potential movement, the gantry incorporates a specially engineered telescopic movement suppression joint.

This joint allows controlled flexibility, preventing excessive stress on the structure while maintaining overall integrity and functionality.

CONTROL

The lighting control system is the finishing touch to the pendant’s impact, enhancing both its visual and conceptual presence. Each of the 24 octagons are individually programmed to emit a pulse of light that travels seamlessly from one end of the 70-metre feature to the other.

This dynamic flow introduces a subtle rhythm and sense of energy, echoing the movement of electricity and drawing directly from the building’s industrial past.

More than just a feature, the lighting becomes part of the storytelling, reinforcing the designer’s vision and adding depth to the architectural experience.

Installation

Accurate installation was guided by detailed drawings that defined the positioning and orientation of each octagon. These plans showed how the octagons relate to a central reference line, including their angles and height variations.

Suspension points were clearly marked to ensure correct placement during installation.

The drawings also outlined the positions of key structural support cables and provided measurements to help align each octagon consistently within the overall layout.

solution

The solution delivered by Studiotech was comprehensive and carefully tailored to support the project’s design intent.

From the early stages, Studiotech collaborated closely with the design team to develop the concept, offering feasibility advice and helping to visualise how the selected luminaires would work within the space.

The scope included detailed engineering drawings, technical support, and the full delivery of the bespoke pendant and gantry; covering engineering design, control, fabrication, supply, installation, programming, and commissioning ensuring that the result was fully aligned with the architectural vision and delivered to the highest standard.

Experience

The pendant brings a sense of drama and elegance as people move through the space. Its movement reflects the designer’s concept, complemented by lighting control that allows each octagon to send a pulse of light from one end to the other, adding a subtle sense of motion and energy, which takes inspiration from the building’s history of electricity and power generation. This creates a dynamic visual experience that complements the character of the space.
