Citylabs 1.0, Manchester

Client: Bruntwood and Manchester Science Partnerships

Scope of work: Detail design, supply, installation and control of feature lighting.

For this project, Bruntwood tasked Studiotech with creating a more engaging and inviting atrium for this new high spec flexible office space in central Manchester.

This was achieved by utilising elements of the existing architecture including the high level overhead steel beams and the low-level bridges.

For the lighting mounted on the underside of the overhead steel beams, Studiotech supplied and installed 89 metres of RGB colour changing LED encapsulated within a PVC housing to create a fully diffused line of light.

Each line of LED was manufactured to follow the curved profile and full length of each beam to create a fully immersive effect.

For the LED mounted on the underside of either side of the bridges, Studiotech supplied and installed 44 metres of RGB colour changing LED strip contained within an aluminium channel that was powder coated to match the colour of the existing steel.

Each line of LED lighting was addressed individually allowing the creation of a variety of dynamic lighting scenes that could be linked to key calendar dates and events to allow for further stakeholder engagement.  To allow for user operation, Studiotech developed a bespoke web based user interface allowing management at City Labs 1.0 to have control over the lighting.  By accessing a local webpage, operators can select pre-programmed scenes as well as select their own colours and scenes to allow for flexibility and dynamic changes.
