Using a total of 28,440 individually addressable lights Studiotech transformed the NOMA tubes into a stunning architectural feature which has revitalised the northern area of Manchester city centre, an area of the city which has not benefitted from the redevelopment evident in most other areas of the city. Designed by Cundall Light4 and implemented by Studiotech the feature is now the focal point of the area and a head turning landmark.
Installed over a period of 16 weeks with up to 12 Studiotech engineers on site at any one time, often in challenging weather conditions, the installation was completed within budget and within the tight time frame.
The flexibility of the installation means that four different lighting modes can be achieved including Twitter mode whereby individuals can tweet the tubes to command basic colour changes which happen immediately. The added benefit of motion sensors means that the lights follow people around the tubes and can depict shadows on the structures.
Manufacturers Traxon Technologies supplied the light fixtures and only Osram products were used throughout the whole installation.
